Artist's Description
This American Sycamore tree, known locally as the "Lafayette Sycamore," is located on the Brandywine Battlefield in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Legend has it that Generals Washington and Lafayette talked under it, perhaps discussing strategy, during the American Revolutionary War, Battle of the Brandywine, September 11, 1777 (the tree, now over 300 years old, would have been about 100 years old at the time...it is located next to the Gilpin House which served as Lafayette's headquarters). The tree is approximately 23 feet in circumference at its base and about 100 feet tall. This image also available in color.
