Description
A sculpture of Scottsdale, Arizona founders, Winfield and Helen Scott. The sculpture is based on a historic photograph of the two with the couple’s mule, Old Maud. Winfield was an Army Chaplain who visited the Salt River Valley in the mid 1800s and saw its potential for agriculture. He returned with his wife in 1888 and purchased a 640-acre strip of land which became what is now downtown Scottsdale. The settlement was originally known as Orangedale due to the many groves Scott planted. Other culturally-minded settlers were also attracted to the area and the town was renamed Scottsdale in 1894.
