Description
City Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an architectural treasure and the largest municipal building in the United States, containing over 14.5 acres of floor space. Construction began in 1871 and took more than 30 years to complete. The first floor is built of solid granite — 22 feet thick in some places — it supports a brick structure faced with marble. The exterior is covered with sculpture representing the seasons and continents, as well as allegorical figures, heads and masks. A 27-ton, 37-foot tall statue of William Penn sits atop the tower...it is the tallest statue atop any building in the world. The 548-foot tower is also the tallest masonry structure in the world without a steel frame.
