Artist's Description
This stone farmhouse served as headquarters for the French General Marquis de Lafayette, who served under General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War Battle of the Brandywine, September 11, 1777, in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania (Lafayette suffered a leg wound during the battle). The home appears much the same as it did then. It was owned by prosperous Quaker farmer, Gideon Gilpin, who lived here with his wife and six young children.
